This application mentions suicidal ideation and 9S himself is very blasé about his wish to die at various points. Proceed with caution.

STRENGTHS:
Intelligent
9S is a very intelligent young man, capable of figuring out solutions to most of his problems even in times of crisis. He’s also fairly quick on his feet and is able to apply the solutions faster than he can explain them. That doesn’t mean he explain things, but if you’re asking him to help you do something he may just do it himself.
Helpful
At his core, 9S really just wants to help people. He wants to help the humans, he wants to help 2B, he even wants to help the machines who are meant to be his enemy. This can sometimes backfire, namely when he decides to start answering a small child’s questions and gets the dreaded Baby Question, but either way.
Amicable
When not going through the hell that is Nier: Automata, 9S is if not friendly then very polite. He rarely loses his temper until everything starts to go pear-shaped and even when he does he’s more distressed than pissed off (again, until everything that happens on route C/D). His voice is usually light, unless he’s snarking, and he’s just very cheerful and approachable.
FLAWS:
Cocky
Being the best and smartest Scanner unit in YoRHa, 9S is can be a bit full of himself at times. Sometimes it’s just jokingly, but he does genuinely think he knows better than most people and that he’s more capable than he may actually be. This gets him seriously injured or worse at some points and it leads to him not liking to admit he may be wrong.
Stunted
For lack of a better word. 9S cannot handle extreme or intense emotions in a healthy manner. Happiness tends to be the only one he can deal with at all, and he does not generally get to experience that level of positivity in canon. YoRHa aren’t meant to have emotions in the first place, and given everything else about 9S he was never given a chance to figure out how to express himself normally.
Nihilistic
This is the big one. Due to events in canon, 9S will do whatever it takes to make the pain stop. “Whatever it takes”, in this situation, includes destruction of the lunar base, which would end humanity. He does not care, and it kills him that he still wants humans to approve of him, so it’s just easier to end it all. End humanity, end YoRHa, maybe end the machines, and eventually...end himself.

AU INFORMATION
AU CHARACTER NAME: 9S aka “Nines” (real name Finn Ainsley, though he does not remember nor respond to it)
AGE: 18ish, he doesn’t really know
POSITION: TA for tech classes, IT aide.
AU BACKSTORY:
-orphaned at a young age
-taken by the totally-not-sketchy YoRHa Organization from his group home
-between being orphaned and being taken by YoRHa, awoke to his psychic ability, likely due to the trauma (if anyone could find his records, they would find he’s very likely of fae heritage but several generations removed)
-proceeded to be experimented on by YoRHa for close to a decade
-during the experimentations, YoRHa and the Red Girls twisted his abilities from “generic psychic” to “psychic but for computers”, leaving him unable to read minds or anything but giving him the ability to interface with computers and manipulate them; all that reminds of his former psychic ability is being able to release blasts of energy, though this does leave him very tired and weak
-about a year ago one of the other experiments he was close to decided “fuck it” and dragged 9S out of the labs. There was a fight, and 9S lost track of the girl. He now assumes that she’s dead.
-managed to set himself up in a city and proceeded to hack, avoid people, and try to get himself killed in fights for several months
-gets into one and is stabbed by a poisoned demonic weapon! Lia Brooks finds him, attempts to administer first aid, is eventually yelled at as 9S runs away because someone being nice and trying to stop him from dying is confusing
-9S recovers, thanks in part to a passing demon hunter who decided no teenager with a bad attitude was going to die on his watch. A conversation with this demon hunter (and the fact that two people in two days were genuinely kind and altruistic) leaves 9S feeling a little bad for his treatment of Lia
-Lia finds 9S several days later, now with food for some reason? 9S and Lia talk several times over the next few days, Daybreak comes up
-9S agrees that maybe going to a school for other people in similar situations wouldn’t actually suck and anyway there are too many demons running around for his taste. There’s wanting it all to end and then there’s letting demons loose, and 9S is not about that last one.
-9S applies as a TA or at least someone in IT because he’s not taking classes that’s boring
AU PERSONALITY DEVIATION: The biggest difference is rather than starting out cheerful and helpful, 9S starts out bitter and resentful of everything and will likely never ever get to his cheerful early-game personality in this AU. With the right development, he could get less bitter but that’s about it.
RACE: Modified human with fae heritage that he doesn’t know about
SECRET SOCIETY: Escaped experimental super soldier from the YoRHa Organization
POWERS: 9S’s main ability is his ability to make computers do what he wants them to. Thanks to the experiments he underwent, his psychic ability was twisted into being a technological power as YoRHa and the Red Girls wanted to see if it was possible.
It was. And they regretted it when he started getting into their computers and cellphones.
While in canon 9S can hijack machines, override them, and make them explode, in Daybreak the most he can do is hack into computers, search things on computers at incredible speeds, and other such “guy in the chair” type things without actually needing to touch a computer. Process and upload YouTube videos, check emails, answer text messages—he can do all of it without much trouble. The stronger the security, the more focus it takes.
Other than that, all that remains of 9S’s original powers is the ability to send out blasts of psychic energy. Due to the experiments, he’s usually left extremely exhausted and ill for a few days afterwards as his constitution is absolutely terrible.

1. TELL US ABOUT YOUR EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND.
I was an experimental child soldier from the time I was a kid until last year. They taught us basic reading, writing, and math, but most everything else I learned myself by hacking their computers or the internet.
2. TELL US ABOUT YOUR TEACHING EXPERIENCE.
I’ve thrown together some how-tos for coding and hacking on the internet, but that’s about it. I didn’t really get out much before coming here.
7. HOW DO YOU MANAGE STUDENTS WHO ARE DEFIANT OR ACTING OUT?
[A shrug] Threaten to read their embarrassing text messages out loud? Bricking their phone if they’re being a real problem?
9. WHAT, IN YOUR OPINION, IS THE MOST IMPORTANT LESSON TO TEACH EVERY STUDENT WHO WALKS THROUGH OUR DOORS?
The ability to use a search engine properly. The number of times I saw someone asking how to do something simple because they couldn’t figure out how to use Google is astounding.

That, and the ability to follow written or video instructions.

I was technically self-employed, so...great! I always finish my work on time and never complain about over time.

I’m really not afraid to go “let me look that up” if I don’t know something.

I can only do it once, but most people don’t like having their brains scrambled with a psychic blast. If that doesn’t work...well, I can disable their communications from afar.
